Amanda Allen left home at 14 and spent decades trying to break the shackles of what she calls 'the black dog'.

REMEMBER TO BREATHE

Picture
Hally Rhiannon-Nammu
To most of us, achieving a senior management role in a company of 300 at age 24 is making it. But, when the sacrifice is authenticity, Hally Rhiannon-Nammu can tell you from experience that it's just not worth it.

Suffering a nervous break-down, is the price Hally paid before she discovered that the only way to real happiness is not professional status but... to, 'walk in my truth everyday'.

PAYING LOVE FORWARD

Picture
Robert Rule, photograph by Andrew Craig
Ex Volunteer firefighter, Robert Rule, was inspired by his late wife, Adele, to continue the work with CAN that she had been dedicated too. Although ill for 28 years, Adele, contributed generously to her community, and her spirit has motivated Rule to do the same.

Rule is founding a Men's Shed that is due to open in July and has already 200 signed members. The thought process behind it is that 'good support, mate-ship and help can really make a difference', he said.

'My wife Adele was always my inspiration when it came to giving her time and supporting others doing it tough – now I just hope that I might be able to inspire one other person to do the same. If that happens, maybe they will inspire someone and so on, until all of Australia is giving back'.

RUN FOR MY LIFE

Picture
Peta Brugel, photograph by Sheree Brugel
Peta Brugel has attended more funerals for friends that have ended their own lives or have had drugs do it for them, than any young person should have too - one is too many!

In hindsight, she realises that her youth in the western suburbs of Sydney began a sequence of events that has  lead to traumatic and challenging experiences. But, thanks to her love and dedication to running, she has survived, and strives to help others find healing through exercise.

FROM CELL TO SURVIVAL

Picture
Gary Goldstein

Your past needn't define you, is the message I hear - loud and clear- from Gary Goldstein's story.

Even though he has been a compulsive gambler, alcoholic and drug addict and has spent time in prison, he's been able to turn his life around and is now the president of the addiction clinic that he was once a patient in.

The key is to realise 'everyone has greatness in them', he says.

STRONG FOR OTHERS

Picture
Allan Sheldon, photograph by Andrew Craig
As Captain of the Taree Volunteer Rescue Association, Allan Sheldon, has some big responsibilities. 'We're the guys and girls you see helping at car accidents, search and rescue and natural disasters'.

Teamwork, is the necessary element to make an association like this work. And, it takes some real gutsy people to come together and do this kind of work. 'We see some things no one should see,' says Sheldon, and although it must be difficult, Sheldon and his fellow volunteers can clearly step up, and be strong for others.

FROM THE EDITOR

Picture
Sometimes we get knowledge and wisdom from unlikely places. Most people I cross paths with educate me - from the beautiful soul who sells 'The Big Issue' near my work, to heads of organisations and publishers. Every one, has a take on life that is different to mine, and therefore, they add a dimension to the world that I hadn't seen before. But, even I - knowing all of this - didn't expect a blue bear to teach me something!
